Playlist promotion vs ads: what actually grows a Spotify profile
September 22, 2026 · Sonist Agency
Two artists spend the same five hundred dollars. One buys playlist placements. One runs a conversion campaign. Thirty days later the playlist artist has more streams. Ninety days later the ads artist has more listeners, more followers and a song the algorithm keeps recommending. Here is why.
What a playlist placement gives you
A slot on a user playlist gives you passive streams from people who did not choose your song. Skip rates are high, save rates are low, and when the placement ends the streams end with it. Spotify’s algorithm reads that pattern for what it is: a song people hear but do not keep. Paid placements on playlists also break Spotify’s rules, and profiles get flagged for it.
What a conversion ad gives you
An ad shows the song to people who like similar artists. The ones who click made a choice. Save rates on well-targeted campaigns can pass fifty percent in the first week and settle around twenty percent long term. Every save and playlist add is a signal to the algorithm, which is why most of the streams from a campaign arrive after it ends, through Discover Weekly, Release Radar and Radio.
The metric that settles it
Look at intent rate in Spotify for Artists: saves plus playlist adds, divided by listeners. Playlist promotion usually produces a few percent. Ads produce twenty percent and up. Whatever you are paying for, that number tells you whether you are buying listeners or renting streams.
Where playlists still help
Editorial and algorithmic playlists are real and free. Pitch every release through Spotify for Artists. Genuine curator playlists that add your song because they like it are fine too. The problem is paying for placement, not playlists themselves.
What we do
We only sell ad spend. No stream guarantees, no playlist fees, and the markup is on the page. See the Meta campaign page for how it works, or read the FAQ if you are still skeptical. Skepticism is healthy in this industry.
